Hunan Provincial Library was founded in 1904.It is the earliest state-run provincial public library. The new Hunan provincial library was built at Shaoshan Road and opened in December,1984, when Hu Yaobang, the General Secretary of the Communist Party at that time, inscribed the library name for the new library.

 

At present, there are 220 employees. The library has about 4.6 million volumes of books, including Chinese common books, journals, antiquarian books, genealogy books, rare books, calligraphy and paintings, letters and so on. The library is well known for rich resources of local literature, and it has set up a unique center Hunan Personage Data Center. Now there are 10 different types of reading rooms providing readers the service of lending various Chinese or foreign languages’ books and journals .

 

Through shared efforts of several generations of Hunan people for over a hundred years, Hunan Provincial Library has been enlightening people and disseminating academic achievements, making a great contribution to the construction of the socialist spiritual civilization, political civilization and material civilization.
